Idea Napkin No.1

My name is Tristan Whittingham and I am an extremely motivated individual and one day I would like to open my own stock brokerage firm. If this business concept were to materialize, it could give me the startup money that I would need to eventually open my own firm. My business concept is a proctoring service which could be an alternative to ProctorU, I could start it, and eventually sell it in order to follow my dreams.
Online students at the University of Florida have to take their exams online as well, on an online proctor service where there is a proctor watching your every move and can be very nerve-racking. My business idea would solve this problem and would allow online students to meet up with a proctor in whichever city there are in, in order to take a pen and paper exam, like they are accustomed to doing. My customers would be any online student at any university in the United States that does not feel comfortable taking an exam via ProctorU. Taking a pen and paper exam is what most students are used to and prefer, so this alternative to ProctorU could allow students to do better on exams. I am a hard-worker and I believe I can make anything successful if I put my mind to it. I believe these concepts fit together nicely and would allow for a very profitable business.

  1. Hi Tristan-
I think it's great that you are a motivated individual. It is definitely something necessary to starting your own business. What are your ultimate dreams you reference in this post? Do you think that it would be hard for you to stick with this business to success if it is not your ultimate passion. I think it's great that you are getting back to pen and paper. Proctor U often throws me off and also weirds me out sometimes that someone can be watching me over the webcam. There certainly are a lot of complaints about Proctor U. I would suggest chasing down these leads and recording them to show potential investors that students really feel passionately about having a different way to take their tests. 2. Hey Tristan, I am glad I read your post since I have taken a few online classes and have had to take exams with ProctorU. I would, as well as many students that use ProctorU, prefer to take written exams with pen and pencil and I think your idea is great. One problem that I think there is with this business would be how the proctors would turn in the exam to be graded or would they just grade them themselves? I hope you achieve your dream and start your own stock brokerage firm. If you want to check my post, here is the link: http://chrisblogent.blogspot.com/2016/02/idea-napkin-no-1.html

  3. Hi Tristan,
I think this is a much needed service. Staring at a screen for an our and half is not exactly conducive to our performance, and doing that in your own bedroom on your little laptop makes it even more awkward. Online exam does not put a student in an exam situation, it puts a student in a stressful and disadvantageous situation.

Maybe looking into the SAT and ACT testing process can bring clues to how to make this happen. Since they have students taking tests at schools they do not attend but still has a recognized and accepted proctor system.

  4. Hi Tristian,
I really like your plan. I struggled with Proctor U for and entire hour and a half tonight to take an exam. They are getting later and later and sometimes they do not even acknowledge the test until 30 minutes after the start. I am intrigued by your idea and would love to know how you plan on implementing this. I look forward to your future posts.
